The Yorkshire Terrier
The Yorkshire Terrier in show coat is an absolute joy to see, long flowing steel
blue coat, shaded tans with full length face furnishings – a perfectly behaved lady
The pet yorkie, or show dog at home presents a very different picture… Yorkies are
terriers and were originally used for ratting; they have never lost this instinct.
A yorkie loves to play with toys, throwing them in the air and chasing them around.
They will throw biscuits around and chase them before eating them, and an intruder
such as the neighbour’s cat is like a red rag to a bull. A yorkie knows that he
is a very important little person which is seen clearly when they strut around with
importance. Despite their size, yorkies are very hardy dogs; they enjoy a good
walk and will run and play in the garden with gusto. They are good house dogs and
will let you know if there is anyone around that shouldn’t be. Yorkies are friendly
dogs and many have found them to be wonderful with children, but don’t forget that
10-12 week old puppies are just babies and they do need a rest from the children.
They are also very tiny at this age and care should be taken that they are not dropped
or stepped on. It is always safer to have a child sit on the floor if they wish
to pick up a puppy or have a cuddle. It is far better to be safe than sorry.
A pet yorkie may never attain the long flowing locks of a show dog, these long coats
are the result of hours of grooming, show coats are always kept tied up in ‘crackers’
to prevent it from breaking, every day it is taken out, groomed and then re-tied.
The pet yorkie also needs to be groomed regularly to prevent the coat from matting,
if this is done from an early age the dog will enjoy the attention. The coat can
be cut to a manageable length to keep it tidy; the hair on the head can be either
cut or tied back to prevent it from hanging in its eyes. Whilst on the subject
of care, don’t forget to make sure the teeth are kept clean.
Because of their size they are a very popular pet, they are very easy to travel with,
don’t eat you out of house and home, are comparatively long lived and a wonderful,
faithful companion to young and old. Give them the love and attention they require
and they will return it tenfold.
